Greater Moses, Greater Exodus

The mountain traditionally identified as Mount Nebo is located about 12 miles east of where the Jordan River enters the Dead Sea, and it rises more than 2.600 feet above sea level. The Dead Sea is the lowest spot in the world, 1,300 feet below sea level. What a dramatic view of this land that Moses longed to see! By inviting Moses to a bird’s eye view of the Promised Land, the Lord showed one last act of kindness to this special leader of God’s people. But maybe it was more than that. Biblical precepts let a man view land he was about to possess. Perhaps this was the Lord’s way of giving Moses a legal guarantee that Israel would really inherit the land, even though Moses would die before it happened. "Moses Sees the Promised Land from Afar" by James I Tissot Click here to listen to this sermon. “And behold, two men were talking with [Jesus], Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! Moses’ long life was marked with mountaintop experiences. At the age of eighty, God spoke to him out of the burning bush on Horeb, the mountain of God, and called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt (Exodus 3:1ff). On Mount Sinai, the Lord spoke to Moses out of the thick cloud and gave him the Ten Commandments (Exodus 19-20). When Moses came down from the mountain, the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God (Exodus 34:29-35). Is the Lord Among Us or Not?

And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” (Exodus 17:7). Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! “Is the Lord among us or not?” That’s what the Israelites demand at a place called Rephidim. Not, “Why is God letting this happen to us?” Or “What is the Lord up to?”, but “Is God even here like He said He’d be?” Talk about change. Three chapters ago, in Exodus 14, the Lord had led them across the Red Sea on dry ground before drowning the Egyptian army in pursuit. The people of Israel sang God’s praises for their deliverance in Exodus 15. Then in chapter 16, the people complained that there was no food, and so God fed them with manna and quail in the wilderness.
