Return of the King

"Christ's Entry into Jerusalem" by Benjamin Robert Haydon Click here to listen to this sermon.  "The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!’ And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him” (John 12:12-16). Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! Palm Sunday processions come in many shapes and sizes. In some churches, they gather in the parking lot. Palms are distributed and blessed and then the crucifer leads then up the doors of the church. Th

Baptized and Able to Drink the Cup

Click here to listen to this sermon. Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at My right hand or at My left is not Mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared” (Mark 10:38-40). Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! On the road up to Jerusalem, Jesus walks ahead of His disciples, a shepherd leading His sheep in the valley of the shadow of death. The disciples are fearful, surprised that He is walking so openly in the stronghold of His enemies. For the third time, Jesus predicts His death and resurrection. This time, He offers more details: “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief pr

Lifted up to Life

"Moses and the Brazen Serpent" by Luca Giordano Click here to listen to this sermon. [Jesus said:] “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15). Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! Many parents will tell you that the only thing worse than traveling a long distance with small children is traveling a long distance ten years later when they’re all teenagers. They can tell time now, so it is generally no longer a constant question of “How much longer until we get there?” but complaint after complaint. “Put something good on the radio.” “You’re going too slow.” “I’m bored.” “I’m hungry.” “Why do I have to always sit in the middle?” “It’s too hot!” “It’s too cold!” “I don’t have any bars [any wireless reception] here!” Now, take that picture and multiply it by thousands; then imagine the trip going on for months, years, even decades.

A Temple Raised

Image
"Jesus Casting Out the Moneychangers" by Carl Bloch Click here to listen to this sermon. The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple He found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the Temple, with the sheep and oxen. And He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And He told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make My Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”       So the Jews said to Him, “What sign do You show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the Temple of His body. When therefore He was
